Dental Implants Presentation
To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed.
About Dental Implants
A Swedish scientist and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, developed this concept for oral rehabilitation more than 35 years ago. With his pioneering research, Dr. Branemark opened the door to a lifetime of renewed comfort and self-confidence for millions of individuals facing the frustration and embarrassment of tooth loss.
Today, dental implants are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence.
What Are Dental Implants?
Implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone and replace the structure of the root where natural teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation to attach teeth constructed by your general dentist
Implants preserve facial structure by preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
The Surgical Procedure
The placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. Following surgery, the implants are allowed to integrate with the bone for a period of two to six months. If needed, there are options available to temporarily replace missing teeth during this healing process.
At the end of this waiting period an abutment is attached to your implant which acts as a support for the final restoration. An abutment is a small metal post that extends out of the implant.

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Dr. DeDecker is often able to place single stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of eight weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. In some situations the doctor is able to place the implant at the same time as a tooth extraction further minimizing the number of surgical procedures.
